Alec D’Urberville tries to tempt Tess with a Strawberry…

I don’t think Hardy approved of feisty, intelligent women like Tess, or like Bathsheba in ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’… they aren’t allowed to prevail, but suffer indignities and worse as their punishment. There are no innocents in Tess, even her parents conspire to set her on the road to doom, but for me the real villain of the piece isn’t Alec D’Urberville, but Angel Clare. IMG_2188-2
